What are free radicals and reactive oxygen species?

Free radicals (free radicals) are atoms or molecules that possess one or more unpaired electrons (e.g., superoxide anion, peroxyl, hydroxyl and nitrogen monoxide radical).

Other reactive molecules they are not free radicals themselves, but they are in an excited state and they initiate oxidation processes and create free radicals (eg molecular and singlet oxygen, hydrogen peroxide).

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) includes free radicals and other reactive molecules.

Free radicals have one or more unpaired electrons in their outer shell and tend to connect to a more stable compound by "subtracting" the electron into another compound. Often they take away electrons from proteins, fats and carbohydrates in our organism and thus trigger a harmful reaction called oxidative stress.

Thus, cells lose their integrity and become damaged or completely dysfunctional. Free radicals often damage our genetic material (DNA molecules).

Under normal circumstances, the formation and binding of free radicals is in balance.

The problem arises when free radicals are created much more than an organism can neutralize them.

Stacking Free Radicals leads to a series of degenerative changes that impairs health and accelerates the aging process, develops cardiovascular, malignant, neurodegenerative and other diseases.
